For me, I think the highlight of the entire trip to South Africa was the day we spent in the wine country around Cape Town. We hired a driver for the day who took us to various wineries in Stellenbosch, Franschoek, and Paarl. We made it to tastings at five wineries and stopped in Franschoek for lunch at Reubens. The food was amazing. Actually, come to think of it, we had a lot of excellent food in South Africa. If you like meat, South Africa is the place for you.
Stellenbosch and the surrounding area is officially the most beautiful wine country I've ever seen. I knew very little about South African wines prior to the trip. It's not a region I was familiar with at all. There were a lot of big reds, and being a fan of robust reds I enjoyed them quite a lot. I was also really surprised by some of the blends. Almost all of the wineries had at least one 90%-10% red-white or white-red blend. I'd never had a multi-colored grape blend before. I wouldn't have guessed that I'd like them, but the Chardonnay Pinot Noirs and Shiraz Viogniers surprised me in a very good way--enough to make it into my suitcase.
