Once a year since 1987 nearly every vineyard in the canton opens their wine cellar during the same hours on the same day for what is essentially a giant canton-wide wine tasting. The idea is that you can go sample the new wines and decide what you want to purchase in the coming year. There are too many vineyards in the canton to make it to all, but with the shuttle busses, tpg, or bicycle, you can be sure to visit several.
We went to the village of Anières because it contains three vineyards and a private cellar within a very short distance of each other and is very easy to get to via public transport from the city of Geneva. We ended up spending the afternoon between two vineyards. Both had seating put up for people who wanted to buy a bottle of wine that they had sampled and sit and enjoy themselves. It was a really fun, really inexpensive day out for Geneva as the wine wasn't subjected to a mark-up. We found some really lovely local wines and now know exactly what I am going to go buy to bring back to the U.S. as gifts.
